23 Things Before 23: One Year Later

When I look back at 2019, I see a year of change. At the start of the year, I moved out of my parent’s house into a one bedroom flat with my boyfriend and I transferred to one of the City branches at my current job as a Clinical Receptionist. At the end of the year, I handed in my notice and am due to start my new job as a Band 5 Physiotherapist at the end of this month and am currently looking at moving to a new one bedroom flat nearer to my new job.

A year ago, on my 22nd Birthday, I wrote a list of 23 things I wanted to achieve by the time I was 23. I turn 23 this week and therefore thought it was time to update you all on my progress.

Visit All The Restaurants in Time Out’s Vegan-Friendly Box

In September 2018, my boyfriend Tom purchased Time Out’s Vegan-Friendly Box where you get 50% off at 8 London-based vegan-friendly restaurants. We managed to visit 6 out of the 9 places on the list: 2 of the restaurants closed during 2019 and the final restaurant we ran out of time to visit. I think the box was a good way to visit new restaurants that we had not necessarily heard of before but we did often find ourselves travelling to London just to visit that restaurant since they were scattered around London. My personal favourites were Ugly Dumpling and Megan’s.

Try 6 New Fitness Classes

Since the start of 2019, I have attended two classes which are included in my gym membership: Yoga and Pilates but have not attended a class since. I have been mostly working out by myself at the gym using the personal training programme that one of my work colleagues put together for me. I would like to try Class Pass this year though as I do enjoy attending classes and find that they motivate me to work-out harder than working out by myself. Have you ever used Class Pass and how did you find it?

Complete The 30 Day Meditation Challenge

This challenge includes starting with 1 minute of meditation on the first day and increasing it by a minute every day up to 30 minutes on the final day. I would still like to complete this challenge at some point but a minute a day sounds more achievable at present.

Visit Ireland & The Isle of Wight

Visiting Ireland has been on my list for the past two years and yet I still have not visited! As with the Isle of Wight, there are so many places in the world that I would love to visit so both of these places often take a back-seat as there are so close and easy to visit.

Try 6 New Hobbies including Learning Calligraphy, Taking A Photography Class & Starting A Travel Journal

I think this goal would have been more achievable had I picked six hobbies that I would like to try this year, although, on the other hand, I did choose three hobbies I would like to try and still failed at completing them! I did pick up two new hobbies in 2019: I have a gym membership that I actually use, although not as regularly as I would like, and Tom and I have switched from bouldering to roped climbing which is much kinder on our hands and bodies in general. I would still like to learn calligraphy, take a photography class and start a travel journal and I need to put time aside during the weekends to do this, perhaps booking a class in order to force myself to try them.

Read 25 Books

According to my Goodreads, I have read 9 books in 2019… not the 25 that I was hoping for! I think I could have read 25 books had I actually read a book on my commute to work rather than binge-watching a TV show. In 2020, I would like to try to read on my commute to work and see if I can beat 9 books.

Complete The Zip Line in Bermondsey

In May 2019, Tom and I completed Velocity 2, the longest zip wire in Europe and fastest in the world. So whilst we did not complete the zip line in Bermondsey, we did complete a zip wire in 2019. I would still like to try the zip wire in the future though.

Practice Driving & Meet A Blogger Friend

These are two items that I would like to complete in 2020. I used to drive regularly when I was living with my parents but since my boyfriend is such a confident driver, it has been easier for him to drive but this has meant that my confidence has decreased. In 2020 I would like to force myself to drive more often to increase my confidence and driving skills.

I would also love to meet a blogger friend. If anyone knows of any blogger groups in London that I could join, please let me know as I would love to meet more bloggers living in London.

I was definitely more successful at completing items on this list in the first 6 months of 2019 than in the latter 6 months. Honestly, I had not reviewed this list since I wrote the 6 month update in July this year which I think is partly to blame as I was not constantly reminded of my goals for the year. For my 2020 list, I will print the list out and attach it somewhere that I will be able to see on a daily basis but also make the goals more attainable as I believe I was very optimistic with my goals in 2019.

I think out of all the posts you make Hannah this is definitely my favourite one – you always do such a good job of it and you actually manage to achieve your goals (unlike me) so I always love to hear you writing about your successes! I’m turning 22 in two weeks so maybe I should do the same kind of thing for myself. Congratulations on your new job as well, how exciting !! I think you did an amazing job with this list and hopefully in 2020 you can continue to work on some of the things you’d still like improve on, I’m excited to read about them in future! xxx

    • Thank you so much Chloe! I am currently working on my 24 before 24 list (it will be uploaded shortly, my new job is taking all of my spare time atm) so hopefully that post will be just as good as well. You should definitely write your own list, it is so good to look back on a year later! xx

  3. I love reading posts like this and this one is so good! It’s so important to reflect on and appreciate your achievements and to consciously set new goals for yourself. I also like that you didn’t automatically write off the goals you weren’t able to achieve but decided to carry some of them on in 2020.

    Personally, I would really like to visit a pottery class sometime and try out a cooking class. Those are things I have been wanting to do for AGES and have somehow never actually pushed myself to do. Maybe I should write myself one of these lists as well.

    I also really like the idea of actually physically having the list (printing / writing it out) and putting it somewhere as a way to be reminded of it. It DEFINITELY makes goals seem more achievable if they are right in front of you. I think that’s why I also write to-do lists, because suddenly those tasks aren’t as intimidating anymore and actually seem like things I can manage.

    • Thank you! It was so weird re-reading the list a year later because I had not changed that much in terms of what I wanted to achieve. I could easily combine all the lists for 2020 and still want to achieve every single item.
      You should definitely do both of those things! I would recommend booking them now, even if it is not for several months, because I feel like we all have a tendency to say we want to do all these things but never complete them. Someone once told me to always complete the action and tell people I have done it rather than telling people what I want to do and honestly, that is probably some of the best advice I have ever been given.
