Following the success of my previous post in this series: ‘Just Hannah Discovers: Sarah Close’, I wanted to upload a post to promote a new artist that I discovered a few months ago, Fletcher. I first discovered Fletcher following the success of her song ‘I Believe You’ but never listened to any of her other songs until earlier this year. I immediately fell in love and her songs have been a constant on my monthly playlists ever since.
Disclaimer: I am aware that I am not ‘discovering’ these artists but hopefully there will be at least one of my readers who will discover a new artist to add to their current playlist.
Who is Fletcher?
Fletcher, otherwise known as Cari Elise Fletcher, is a 25 year old American singer-songwriter. Originally from New Jersey, she currently spends her time between Los Angeles, New York City and New Jersey. She was a contestant in the premiere season of The American X Factor but was eliminated during the fifth week. Her debut EP was released in 2016 following a move to Tennessee to collaborate with producer Jamie Kenney.
What is your favourite song of hers and why?
If You’re Gonna Lie. I always find that this song gets stuck in my head every time I listen to it. There is a strong beat throughout the song and the lyrics themselves are catchy and easy to remember. Reading through the lyrics, you realise just how upsetting the situation the song is about is but this is masked by the upbeat nature of the background music.
What song do you relate to the most and why?
I Believe You. This song was inspired by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement with all proceeds from the song going to Time’s Up Legal Defence Fund. If you have followed my blog for a while then you would realise just how important both of these movements are to me and why I can relate to the song.
What is your favourite music video of hers and why?
Wasted Youth. This is the first music video that Fletcher released and stars both her and her now ex-girlfriend, Shannon, otherwise known as nowthisisliving. Whilst there is no particular story told in the music video, it does feature multiple clips of Shannon and Fletcher during their relationship. Fletcher revealed in an interview that this was intentional to showcase a same sex relationship in normalised settings.
What is your favourite lyric of hers and why?
‘So if you’re gonna lie, do it in my bed’
This lyric is taken from her appropriately named song, If You’re Gonna Lie, which you may remember is my favourite song of hers. I am not entirely sure why I love this lyric so much other than I find it a clever play of words.
Have you ever seen her perform live?
I have never been fortunate enough to see her perform live but if she ever comes to London to play a gig, I would love to go see her perform.
What song would you recommend to new listeners?
Live Young Die Free. Whenever I hear this song, I always think of how incredible it would sound live with the whole audience singing along. It is the perfect power anthem with a catchy beat and lyrics.
