23 Things Before 23: 6 Months In

On my birthday every year, which also happens to be almost the start of the new year, I like to write a list of a certain number of items that I would like to achieve that year. I cannot believe that it has been six months since I wrote the list for this year as honestly, it feels like no time has passed at all, but this is something I am learning is common among other post-graduates. Does anyone else feel like life post-graduation passes by faster than life pre-graduation?

Since we are now over halfway through the year as of July 10th, I wanted to take the time to reflect upon the goals that I have achieved and set intentions for the next six months.

Complete Veganuary

Veganuary involves eating plant-based as much as possible during the month of January. When I decided to participate in Veganuary this year, I was certain that I would only last a week maximum without consuming an animal product. However, I surprised myself by being able to complete the entire month of Veganuary only consuming one animal product, to my knowledge, which was a piece of birthday cake for my 22nd birthday. I was honestly astonished at how easy it can be to consume a fully plant-based diet if you actually try, although it does take some resilience as it meant I could not consume a wide variety of snack food including doughnuts, cookies and biscuits. I am definitely going to attempt Veganuary next year as well.

Visit All The Restaurants in Time Out’s Vegan-Friendly Box

In September 2018, my boyfriend Tom purchased Time Out’s Vegan-Friendly Box where you get 50% off at 8 London-based vegan-friendly restaurants. We currently have two more places to visit on the list and then I will be uploading a post all about our experience and the (mostly) delicious food that was consumed.

Try 6 New Fitness Classes

In April of this year, my boyfriend Tom and I finally got a gym membership to one of our local gyms and although we have not been the most consistent gym users, we are starting to get into a semi-regular routine. When we originally joined in April, we attended two of the classes held there: Yoga and Pilates, however, we have since decided to work-out by ourselves using the equipment and free weights. I may still try another four classes before the end of the year, perhaps boxing, but at the moment I am happy working-out by myself.

Hike Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England at 978 metres above sea level. Whilst I have not hiked Scafell Pike as of yet, I did hike Snowdon whilst we were visiting a University friend of mine in Wales, which is actually taller than Scafell Pike, standing at 1085 metres above sea level. I may still hike Scafell Pike this year but having hiked Snowdon, I know for certain that I am capable of hiking it, should I want to.

Visit Liverpool

On the 30th March 2019, my two best friends from secondary school, Anna and Grace, and I decided to visit Liverpool for the weekend. It was definitely just as picturesque as it was in pictures and we had lots of fun walking around and exploring all of the different parts of Liverpool as well as eating at lots of different cafes. You can read my blog post about the weekend here.

Learn How To Make Vegan Carbonara

In June of this year, I decided to make vegan carbonara using a recipe that I had found online. It used vegan bacon pieces in place of bacon and the white cheesy sauce was replaced by tofu or cashew nuts and vegan cheese. It was a failure. The bacon pieces themselves were delicious but the sauce did not taste good at all and I ended up throwing the entire mixture away. I will stick to vegetarian carbonara for now.

Learn How To Make 3 Cocktails

I am a huge cocktail lover. Every time I visit a bar or a restaurant, I always want to order a cocktail but often these are quite expensive compared to non-alcoholic beverages, beer or cider. So I decided to learn how to make my three favourite cocktails at home: Sex On The Beach, Mojito and Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri. I was surprised at how similar they tasted to the cocktails you order at a bar and I will definitely be remaking them for any future flat parties. You can read my blog post here for all the recipes I used.

See Harry Potter & The Cursed Child at the Theatre

In July of this year, I finally went to see Harry Potter & The Cursed Child at the Theatre, having booked the tickets in October last year. The special effects were incredible but the story line and acting itself was not on the same level as that of the Harry Potter movies. The theatre was cramped and uncomfortably warm. Whilst I am grateful that I got the opportunity to see the screen play brought to life, I think I will stick with watching the films from the comfort of my flat.

See Waitress at the Theatre

For those of who you have never heard of Waitress before, it is a theatre production that tells the story of Jenna, a waitress in an abusive relationship with her husband, who falls unexpectedly pregnant. Wanting a better life for her unborn child, she becomes determined to win the pie contest so she can use the grand prize as her chance to escape to a better life.

I finally went to see the production earlier this year as a belated birthday present with my mum and sister and although I had high expectations of the show, it met every single one of them. Since there was unsold tickets, we got upgraded to better seats which each came with a free jar of pie including banoffee pie, apple pie and chocolate pie. This was such an unexpected touch and it made the experience that much more enjoyable. The production itself was incredible – I loved every single one of the songs and the actors did an amazing job. I cannot compliment it enough.

See Hayley Kiyoko Live

In February of this year, Grace and I went to see Hayley Kiyoko live for the first time. We have both been a fan of Hayley Kiyoko ever since Lemonade Mouth was released and it was exciting to finally see her live for the first time. She was incredible – her voice never faltered even though she was dancing just as much as in her music videos and we got to hear all of our favourite songs live in person. I would highly recommend seeing if you ever get the chance.

Move Out (Again)

In February of this year, my boyfriend Tom and I moved into a one bedroom flat. Tom was living with housemates prior to this and I was technically living with my parents at their house so it was nice to finally have a place to ourselves that we could call home. You can have a nose around our flat in this blog post.

Reach 1000 Followers

In June of this year, I hit 1000 followers on this blog which almost coincided with my two year anniversary of this blog. Whilst I was fairly sure that I was going to reach 1000 followers this year, it still feels surreal that there are 1000 people following my blog and reading the posts that I have written. Grace bought me the tastiest giant cookie to celebrate (because cookies > cake) which was so sweet of her. She recently reached 1000 followers herself so you should check out her blog too.

There are still a number of items that I have yet to complete this year. These are: to complete the 30 day meditation challenge, to visit Dublin and the Isle of Wight, to try six new hobbies, to start a travel journal, to learn calligraphy and photography, to read 25 books, to complete the zip line in Bermondsey, to practice driving and to meet a blogger friend. Still tuned till next January to see if I manage to complete them all.

How are you getting on with your New Year Resolutions?

  1. Aw I loved this reflectory post (is that even a word btw)? You’ve achieved so much and yay for reaching 1000 followers! What a milestone.

Waitress sounds amazing too, I had no idea what the show was about until then. It’s definitely on my list to go and see but I’m not that bothered about seeing Harry Potter.

Good luck with ticking everything off for the rest of the year, I’m sure you’ll achieve so much and do everything you want to do! Have a fab one 🙂

    • Thank you! That is probably not a word but I know what you mean. It is always good to reflect back on how far you have come but also how far you still have to go.
I would highly recommend if you live in the London area! Although maybe they will tour the UK soon as well?
      Thank you! You too. xx

  2. It’s so inspiring to see everything you’ve managed to achieve !! Also that cookie is the sweetest thing, what a nice thing to receive! I hope the rest of the year is equally as good to you .xx

  3. Wow, good job being vegan for a WHOLE month! And you only broke it because of cake which is AMAZING! I’m looking forward to reading the vegan-friendly restaurants you’ve patronized! You should totally go for more classes like spinning, or the reformer! Its so fun! And boxing is so cool, I hope you’ll like it! And good job on Snowdon, I hope you check off your list and hike Scafell too! Liverpool has such beautiful buildings in the right places! Creamy pasta is glorious when done right but absolute bleah when not (unlike tomato which is alot easier to get right), I hope you find a recipe that works! Nice work on the cocktails! Urgh, I love theatre productions, I wished I went to more of them! Congrats on 1000!!! That’s amazing! I’m looking forward to seeing what you will achieve in the second half! 😍👍

    • Thank you Cordelia!
I could have done the whole month but because it was my own birthday cake, I felt rude turning it down. My boyfriend did purchase a really good vegan cake for me to have at home though which was so considerate of him.
I really want to but I am super anxious about trying new classes as I feel really unfit! Do you think you need to be fit for those classes?
Tomato dishes are definitely a lot easier to cook and make vegan but I do find myself making way too many tomato based dishes. I guess the Italian in me is coming through! xx

  4. The people I was travelling with were obsessed with waitress, so I definitely want to make sure I see it when I’m back in September! (Free pies with a show… count me in) It sounds like you’re absolutely smashing your goals for the year girl!! Congrats on 1000 followers, you deserve it 💕💕 Veganuary sounds like a brilliant challenge … might give it a go myself next year!xx

    • Thank you!
I would highly recommend if you get the chance. They have actually changed the cast since I saw it but I am sure it is still as good.
Good luck if you do decide to participate! xx

  5. What I need, What I need,What I need is for you to be sure no no no…
sorry I saw the Hayley Kiyoko concert pictures and got that song stuck in my head, haha. But congrats to you for keeping with your new years/birthday goals and reach 1000 followers. I agree: every one acts like going to see things in theatre is this MAGNIFICENT experience but I find that Youtube/Netflix does the trick just fine.
