Marie Kondo-ing My Life

As most of you are aware, I recently moved out for the first time since University into a one bedroom flat with my boyfriend. If you have ever moved out before, then you will understand the shock when you realize just how many belongings you have managed to accumulate over the years. Moving out is the perfect time to sort out your belongings as it forces you to pack every item you own, even the boxes under your desk that have been there since the beginning of University. This is where Marie Kondo comes in.

Marie Kondo is the author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a book dedicated to helping others sort and organize their lives. It divides belongings into five categories: clothing, books, paperwork, miscellaneous and mementos. The process involves holding each belonging and deciding whether or not it brings you joy. If it does, you can keep the belonging but if it does not, you must get rid of the belonging after thanking it for its service.

The sorting process is not a short one – it can take weeks to sort through and organize every belonging you own. Personally, I have only sorted two of the five categories: clothing and books, but already I have picked up some tips to make the sorting process easier.

Tip 1: Have Four Piles: Definitely, Maybe, Throw and Donate

One of the hardest parts for me was deciding whether to keep or donate an item of clothing, therefore, I decided to introduce a maybe pile. This was a pile of clothing that I was unsure about. I decided to keep the pile for a month, although you can pick any length of time, and if I did not reach for any of the books within the pile during that time period, I would donate it.

Tip 2: Get Rid of Duplicates or Similar Items

I never realized how many similar items of clothing I had until I laid them all out on my bed. For example, one person does not need four long-sleeved black t-shirts and three pairs of blue skinny jeans. This tip also works with books. Find out what books your friends/siblings/partner owns and donate any duplicate books. Especially if you are living with your partner like I am, you do not need two copies of the same book on your bookshelf.

Tip 3: Use A Scanner

One way to reduce paperwork and to sort it into organized folders, is to take scanned copies of all documents and sort them into files on your computer. Not only does this take up less space than physical paperwork, but it is easier to find the document that you want as you can easily see and search by document names.

Tip 4: Fold Your Clothing Into Drawers

Marie Kondo teaches us the most efficient way of folding clothing into drawers in the first episode of her Netflix TV show. The method she teaches allows one to easily see and select the shirt they want without wasting time sorting through the drawer and stores the clothing efficiently.

Tip 5: Buy A Kindle

Similar to my earlier point about scanning important paperwork, also consider buying an e-book over a physical copy of a book. A Kindle takes up less space than physical books and can often be lighter. This is especially important if you have limited space in your flat as often a Kindle can be stored in a drawer whereas books have to be on display.

  1. These are such good tips !! Honestly having a scanner is a LIFE SAVER, I don’t know what I’d do without one sometimes. Having everything electronically instead of paper-based is so much better! xx

  2. I love how we both approached this post differently!! I love what you wrote about scanning paperwork, I think it’s something a lot of people just say they’re going to do later and shove it aside. I don’t believe in going absolutely paperless, I think that is too clinical of an approach for me, but I do like the idea of reducing. Thanks again for collabing with me, I had so much fun!

    • I have yet to read your post (work has been crazy, I do apologize) but I am excited to see how you have approached it. I love that we left it open to interpretation so our posts are linked but not identical.
      There is definitely some paperwork I need to keep the originals of but most of it is just information (like bank statements, council bills) that I can print off if I need the original of and it takes up so much space honestly. One can always improve though. xx

  3. Omw I totally needed these tips. For 2 years now, I have been trying to be a minimalist but all i seem to do is just buy more and more stuff and convincing myself that I need them when i actually don’t. Thank you so much for this post, i need to start reading that book by Marie Kondo✨
