July Favourites

July has been a very busy month. At the start of the month I celebrated my brother’s 18th birthday with a day-out in London before flying to Portugal for a week of sun, sand and sangria. Upon my return to England and the heatwave we are currently experiencing, I had my best friend Grace’s birthday day-out, also in London, followed by my Graduation. Blog posts on all of the former coming soon so stay tuned!

Films & TV

Home Again

Home Again stars Reese Witherspoon as Alice Kinney in a modern romantic comedy. Recently separated from her husband, Alice decides to start over by moving back to her hometown of LA with her two young daughters. During a night out, Alice meets three aspiring filmmakers who happen to be in need of a place to live. Alice agrees to let the guys stay in her guest house temporarily, but the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie on Netflix, I knew I had to watch it. It was a storyline that I had never seen covered by a movie or TV show before and I have loved Reese Witherspoon ever since Legally Blonde. The movie did not disappoint. It was funny and yet adorable at the same time – the perfect rom-com for any family member.

Miracles From Heaven

When Christy discovers her 10 year old daughter Anna has a rare incurable disease, she becomes a ferocious advocate for her daughter’s healing as she searches for a solution. After Anna has a freak accident, an extraordinary miracle unfolds in the wake of her dramatic rescue that leaves medical specialists mystified, her family restored and their community inspired.

I watched this movie on the plane to Portugal, which probably was not my best decision as I ended up crying on the plane. The movie was portrayed in such a way that I felt fully invested in Anna and her recovery as well as the welfare of the whole family. The fact that it is based on a true story as well only made it that much more of an emotional watch. I would highly recommend watching, just remember to have tissues nearby!

Youth and Consequences

Anna Akana plays a powerful trendsetter, Farrah Cutney, the queen of Central Rochester High. But as her rivals rise, Farrah learns that the only thing harder than obtaining absolute power is keeping it.

I binge-watched the entire season one overnight – that is how good it is. I have always been a fan of Anna Akana’s YouTube videos where she addresses seemingly taboo topics in a creative and educational way, so when I found out she was starring in a short series, I was excited to watch it. It did not disappoint. Think Pretty Little Liars meets Gossip Girl.

Books

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Amy Curry is not looking forward to her summer. Her mother decided to move across the country and now it’s Amy’s responsibility to get their car from California to Connecticut. The only problem is, since her father died in a car accident, she isn’t ready to get behind the wheel. Enter Roger. An old family friend with his own baggage.

I am a huge fan of Morgan Matson’s books so when I found out that I had not read a book of hers, I knew I must read it immediately. I could not put the book down, it was that good. I adored the characters of both Amy and Roger and although the book was predictable, I could not imagine it ending any other way. It made me so excited to one day go on my own road trip across America – Morgan Matson actually went on the road trip detailed in the book herself and the photos in the book are her own, how cool is that?!

I Have Lost My Way – Gayle Forman

Around the time that Freya loses her voice while recording her debut album, Harun is making plans to run away from home to find the boy that he loves, and Nathaniel is arriving in New York City after a family tragedy leaves him isolated on the outskirts of Washington State. After the three of them collide in Central Park, they slowly reveal the parts of their past that they haven’t been able to confront, and together, they find their way back to who they’re supposed to be.

I think this book has replaced my favourite Gayle Foreman book. I loved the way that she was able to integrate three completely different characters into one storyline flawlessly and yet allow you to get to discover each of the characters evenly. The book itself was such a bittersweet story of both loss and love and I finished it feeling as if I had just been taken on an emotional journey.

What have you been loving this month?
