Spring officially began on the 20th of March but it is only these past few days that it has began to feel like Spring with flowers beginning to sprout and the sun finally coming out from behind the grey clouds. For me, Spring has always been associated with beginnings and change – leaves and flowers begin to grow back on trees and new flowers are planted ready for Summer – and therefore is the perfect time for the appropriately-named Spring Clean. There are three main areas that I associate with Spring Cleaning – physical, mental and social – and therefore there will be three posts in this mini series to cover each. Today’s post is about my tips for a physical spring clean which involves cleaning and tidying your space.
Focus on one room per day
Some people prefer to set one day aside to clean their entire apartment but personally, this is unrealistic as I know I will get bored and seek distraction in the form of Netflix. Therefore, I prefer to spread the spring clean over several days and focus on one room per day. If you are fortunate enough to live with your parents, this may just mean you set aside one day to clean your bedroom, although I am sure your parents would love if you cleaned the entire house for them!
Blast an uplifting playlist whilst cleaning
Time always seems to pass that much quicker when I am listening to music as it helps to make the task more enjoyable. I am currently loving the Easy 00s playlist on Spotify but you can always use your own playlist. Alternatively, you can listen to a podcast – I am currently listening to Don’t Blame Me which is an advice post by YouTuber Meghan Rink – but there are plenty of free podcasts on iTunes or TedTalks on YouTube.
Focus on one thing at a time
It can feel very overwhelming when faced with a messy and dirty room so focus on one thing at a time. I like to start by throwing away any rubbish that has accumulated and then clear the floor and any furniture of clutter so I can thoroughly clean. Do not move onto the next task until you have finished the previous task – I have lost count of the number of times I have emptied my wardrobe to have a sort-through only to get distracted and then have to put all the clothes back without sorting through them.
Donate or sell your unwanted items
I find it so difficult to get rid of items that I no longer use or own because I convince myself that I will need them again in the immediate future… spoiler, this hardly ever happens! My rule is that if I have not used or worn something in the last year, then it must go. Rather than have it lying around gathering dust, sell or donate it so that it can be used and worn by someone else. I prefer to donate my items to charity shops because I know other less fortunate people will benefit from the funds raised but if it is an expensive item of clothing or a complete series of books is of good quality, I will sell it on Ebay.
A problem shared is a problem solved
Just like working out with a friend is more fun, so is spring cleaning. You can have dance parties to the killer playlist you created and motivate each other. If you are living with flatmates, this is easier as it is your shared responsibility to keep the communal areas clean, but if not you can always agree to spend a day at each other’s apartments, helping the other clean. After all, twice as many hands makes half the amount of work!
